Diabetes and Sport

Just because you suffer from diabetes doesn’t mean that you are precluded from competing at the highest level. There have been some very successful sportsmen and women who have also had to manage their health.

Athletes with diabetes compete in a wide variety of sports, including marathons, cycling, and football. What these athletes do, as should any person with diabetes wanting to compete in sports or exercise, is take responsibility for their disease. Taking responsibility means doing the following:
• Testing your blood sugar before you start playing and right after you stop
• Test every half hour while playing if the activity is intense
• If your blood sugar levels are too high, avoid playing until you have lowered them through medication
• Do not play immediately after eating. A one-hour delay is advisable in most cases
• Wear proper-fitting shoes as diabetics tend to have poor circulation

As well as personally doing the right thing to manage your diabetes, it’s important that others around you are aware that you are a diabetes sufferer so they are prepared in case an emergency situation should arise.

Installing A New Lawn

There are two different ways of forming a lawn – by laying down turfs and by sowing seed. Which of these two methods is better depends entirely on the requirements. If a lawn is wanted quickly, it can be got by using turfs; but if a good lawn is required at small expense, and there is sufficient patience to wait for it then by all means let seed be sown.

The disadvantage in laying down turf is that the defects of an old lawn are thus implanted, and gain renewed vigour on a new. With seed sowing we have, so to speak, a carte blanche to work upon.

The first thing to consider is whether the ground is drained. If not, then that work should at once be performed. In heavy soils the drains will need to be nearer the surface and nearer to each other than in a light soil. In no case should they be less than eighteen inches from the surface.

Next you need to dig and trench the ground to the depth of eighteen inches if possible, and in any case not less than one foot. In this work an eye should be kept to making the soil level by freeing the surface from lumps and hollows.

It is a good plan to work among the soil some well-decayed manure and some leaf soil and, if heavy, some lime. With a heavy soil should be incorporated some good loam, free from weeds; and an opportunity here presents itself of disposing of a good quantity of sifted coal ashes. The digging must be of a uniform depth, whatever that may be.

If you’d rather take the low maintenance option you might prefer to find a little more about an alternative option like synthetic grass which might be a reasonable choice, cost-wise.

Some Facts About Coffee

Coffee is a complex mixture of chemicals that provides significant amounts of chlorogenic acid and caffeine. Unfiltered coffee is a significant source of cafestol and kahweol, which are diterpenes that have been implicated in the cholesterol-raising effects of coffee.

The results of epidemiological research suggest that coffee consumption may help prevent several chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, Parkinson’s disease and liver disease (cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma). Most prospective cohort studies have not found coffee consumption to be associated with significantly increased cardiovascular disease risk.

However, coffee consumption is associated with increases in several cardiovascular disease risk factors, including blood pressure and plasma homocysteine. At present, there is little evidence that coffee consumption increases the risk of cancer. For adults consuming moderate amounts of coffee (3-4 cups/d providing 300-400 mg/d of caffeine), there is little evidence of health risks and some evidence of health benefits.

Some groups, including people with hypertension, children, adolescents, and the elderly, may be more vulnerable to the adverse effects of caffeine. In addition, currently available evidence suggests that it may be prudent for pregnant women to limit coffee consumption to 3 cups/d providing no more than 300 mg/d of caffeine to exclude any increased probability of spontaneous abortion or impaired fetal growth.

Low Mow Grass

There is a new kind of grass out there that reportedly requires less mowing than the traditional types of grass, and I mean much less mowing. The grass is called carex pansa and it is an evergreen creeping lawn that grows into a natural looking lawn but it only needs to be mowed around 4 times a year.

The grass can be planted from plugs planted around 6 to 12 inches apart. The important thing in using carex pansa is to entirely remove the old lawn first or the weeds in the old lawn will give you unsatisfactory results.

It should be noted that carex pansa is a native grass and will give you more of a meadow look rather than a formal manicured lawn look.

The Victorian Bushfires

We are still trying to come to terms with the bushfires that ravaged Victoria last week, unable to comprehend the magnitude of what must have been unbelievable proportions. The loss of so many lives, over 180 with the expectation that the toll will rise even higher, just mind-numbing by the enormity of it all.

Living in New South Wales you would think we would feel far enough removed, but with recent bushfires here still fresh in our memories we feel as though we have some understanding of the feeling of the affected people. The fact that many of these fires are deliberately lit serves to stir up enormous resentment as well as mob mentality with an overwhelming desire to get some kind of revenge.

When the survivors are allowed back into their towns, there will not so much a fire damage cleanup to take care of as a clearing of the debris to allow houses to be rebuilt on the now decimated lots.

The response from the rest of the country has been nothing short of magnificent with donations simply pouring in from all corners of Australia. It is another example that there is still tremendous generosity of community spirit out there to help overcome what is turning out to be Australia’s worst ever natural disaster.

It MUST be True

Ahh, yes. The Internet, the place where you can find out everything about everything. And d’you know the great thing about the ole Internet? That’s right, it is the official font of all wisdom and knowledge. If you’ve heard something on the Internet you know that it must be true, otherwise what’s it doing on the Internet, right? Right?

Okay, maybe that’s overstating things a little bit, maybe not quite everything you read on the Internet is true, I’m happy to back-pedal just a touch. But you’ve got to admit, the place has some pretty good stuff on it.

This is my little patch of the Font of Wisdom, the Truth, the educational tool extraordinaire. I’ll be doing my bit to keep it real, so to speak.
